Diabetes is a well-known chronic disease that affects millions of people around the world; it is characterized by the presence of hyperglycemia. The objective of this article was to determine the metabolites associated with the onset and treatment of type 1, 2 and gestational diabetes mellitus. The information for this study was obtained from databases, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus and other search sources, such as university databases. The selected articles were used to see the relationship that some metabolites of protein, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism had with diabetes mellitus. In total, 30 articles were selected, which provided information on the association of metabolites such as BCAAs, aromatic amino acids, acylcarnitines, hexoses, among others, with type 1, 2 and gestational diabetes. This review suggests that the combination of metabolic biomarkers, such as amino acids, sugars and fatty acids, can provide a comprehensive view of the risk, diagnosis and progression of diabetes mellitus.spa
