The Armenia earthquake on January 25, 1999, had a devastating impact on the Coffee Axis region of Colombia, revealing significant vulnerabilities in urban infrastructure and territorial planning. This seismic event, with a magnitude of 6.1, exposed deficiencies in construction regulations and underscored the need for enhanced resilience against future disasters. The aim of this study is to analyze the earthquake's characteristics, its effects on the infrastructure of the municipality of Pereira, and the structural and stratigraphic conditions that influenced these effects. A documentary analysis was conducted, reviewing information from indexed databases and repositories from national and international entities. Keywords related to the seismic event and its impact on civil engineering were employed. The results demonstrated a relationship between the geotechnical characteristics of the region and the distribution of damage, highlighting those areas with intermediate deposits of volcanic ash were most affected. Additionally, the importance of interinstitutional coordination in disaster response was evident. It is concluded that the earthquake highlighted the need to update construction regulations and improve territorial planning by integrating seismic risk considerations to mitigate future disasters and strengthen urban infrastructure in Colombia.spa
