La eutanasia como enfrentamiento al sentido de la existencia en el enfermo terminal

Abstract

Para los seres humanos este tema suele ser esquivado pues seguramente muy pocos de manera consciente desearían experimentar un evento tan inevitable. Sin embargo, se presentan situaciones en la vida de muchas personas donde el tema de la muerte adquiere un significado apremiante, de tal manera que es preciso enfrentarlo. Se trata de quienes padecen terribles enfermedades declaradas medicamente como enfermos terminales. Las enfermedades terminales caracterizadas por ser progresivas e incurables, contienen un gran sufrimiento tanto físico como psíquico no sólo en el paciente que la sufre, sino también en la familia que le rodea. Es así que el enfermo terminal se encuentra soportando profundas aflicciones y fuertes dolencias con una nula posibilidad de curarse. Los padecimientos suelen ser intolerables debió que ni aún la medicina paliativa alcanza mediante sus fármacos a evitar el dolor. Por esto, el enfermo terminal sujeto de decisiones, con plena libertad sobre su cuerpo que se desgarra en padecimientos, puede llegar a la conclusión que no vale la pena continuar viviendo de esa manera. En ese sentido, la muerte ya no es el tema que se evita, porque la muerte se convierte en un suceso ansiado, y el afán se vuelca al deseo que la muerte llegue pronto, que no se detenga en el camino, que agilice sus pasos, pues ella pondrá fin al dolor irresistible y al resquebrajamiento de una anatomía que se deteriora progresivamente. El problema de la muerte no consiste simplemente en su carácter de inevitable porque llegará en cualquier momento de la vida, limitando para siempre las posibilidades de existencia en el ser humano. Es un problema igualmente cuando no se presenta en el momento oportuno en aquellos seres humanos cuya existencia se interrumpió debido a la enfermedad terminal que padecen, pues igualmente el límite de toda posibilidad de existencias es la postración, el estancamiento de toda acción y movimiento, ya que el ser humano no sólo tiene vida, sino también, existencia personal. En este aspecto, el ser humano bajo ciertas circunstancias puede verse conducido a la necesidad de poner fin al sufrimiento desistiendo definitivamente de su vida cuando la calidad de esta se degrada. Por tanto, la eutanasia como derecho a morir dignamente se presenta como la opción de proporcionarle a una persona enferma terminal que sufre, una muerte asistida y sin dolor. En consecuencia, la eutanasia enfrenta al hombre con el sentido de su existencia cuando esta se encuentra opacada por intensos sufrimientos y dolores insoportables causados por la enfermedad terminal.

Thus, the terminally ill patient is enduring deep afflictions and strong ailments with no possibility of healing. The ailments are usually intolerable due to the fact that even palliative medicine does not achieve pain through its drugs. Because of this, the terminal patient who is the subject of decisions, with full freedom over his body that is torn by suffering, may reach the conclusion that it is not worthwhile to continue living in that way. In that sense, death is no longer the subject that is avoided, because death becomes an event longed for, and eagerness turns to the desire that death comes soon, that it does not stop along the way, that it speeds its steps , because she will put an end to the irresistible pain and the cracking of an anatomy that progressively deteriorates. The problem of death does not simply consist in its inevitability because it will come at any time in life, forever limiting the possibilities of existence in the human being. It is a problem equally when it does not appear at the right moment in those human beings whose existence was interrupted due to the terminal illness they suffer, because equally the limit of all possibility of existences is the prostration, the stagnation of all action and movement, and that the human being not only has life, but also, personal existence. In this aspect, the human being under certain circumstances can be driven to the need to end suffering by definitively giving up his life when the quality of it is degraded. Therefore, euthanasia as a right to die with dignity is presented as the option of providing a terminally ill person suffering, an assisted and painless death. Consequently, euthanasia confronts man with the sense of his existence when it is overshadowed by intense suffering and unbearable pain caused by terminal illness.
